Day Twenty-One Nelson
April 03
-
-
An adventure day in Abel Tasman National Park - located about 60 minutes
from Nelson.
-
After a ride along the apple orchards and scenic views of the bay, we
arrived at the
-
Kaiteriteri Kayak office.
-
-
Interesting start is the Aqua Taxi - not a walk up to a dock and jump in a
boat. Boats are on
-
trailers and parked at the offices down from the bay. When time to
leave, everyone climbs
-
aboard and dons their life vests. A tractor tows the trailer out into
the bay beyond the shallow
-
waters. Our boat captain almost forgot the kayaks - once remembered, they're tied onto
the
-
back of the boat.
-
-
Our aqua taxi transported us along the coast to Watering Cove. After a
safety and instructional
-
demonstration, we were off. The kayaks included rudder and foot cable
control. Our guide
-
directed us along the calm coast with insight on the local flora and
fauna. A treat was a
stop
-
at Fisherman's Island. Tea, hot chocolate, and French press coffee
(known as "proper coffee")
-
was
prepared.
-
-
We returned back to Marahau beach and had a long walk due to the low
tide. During the
-
drive back to Nelson, the moon was rising over the bay for a spectacular
vista.
